On June. 4, 2009 Island Herbs Hawaii met with Clayton Honma, deputy director of Parks & Recreation , Bob Fitzgerald, director of Parks & Recreation, and Pat Daly, Superintendent of Parks Maintenance. We did a presentation called "Enviromental Solutions" and helped educate those present on EM and EM Bokashi and their applications for our parks and public areas. It was such an exceptional day!
Parks and Recreation personnel were so impressed with our information that they awarded us five opportunities to make a difference in the County of Hawaii!
President of EMHawaii, Hiro Nago met with our partner, Bob Stanga, owner of Hamakua Mushrooms. They gave us a grand tour of the facility, and discussed cultivation of a new mushroom, Pepeau, indiginous to Hawaii. Many thanks and blessings to Hamakua Mushrooms for this opportunity.
Island Herbs Hawaii requested permission to "adopt" a park, to show our stuff! We were awarded Pehoehoe State Park. In addition, they commissioned us to train the current landscape personnel at four other County Parks, including Liliuokalani Park in Hilo, Hilo Municipal Golf Course, Kekoaokalani soccer field, Waimea Rugby field and cherry tree line.We are elated to have EM Bokashi technology applied to these sites.

Fungus in the grass at Kekoaokalani Park - Kona
June 4, 2009 ~ Owner, Clarence Baber (Cab) doing an early-morning spray application of EM Bokashi, orange oil, coconut soap, neem oil, and beneficial herbs to the Kekoaokalani soccer field, at the old airport in Kona.
EM Bokashi will help to remediate the fungus (limu) growing in various puddled areas of the field. EM Bokashi allows aeration of roots, and builds one inch of soil per year to the ground upon which it is applied. This improves root strength. Due to the fact that this grass was planted over asphalt, the drainage is a highly difficult obstacle for the overall health and wellness of the field.
The overall challenge of planting and maintaining a grass field over an asphalt base is ongoing. We have no way of knowing how long it will take for remediation to be complete. All we know is, EM Bokashi is the only hope for this beleaguered field. We are now spraying once every three weeks to this site.
In 1996, this park was a blue ribbon winner for its overall beauty. We at Island Herbs have a special affinity for this location, as it is right past Magic Sands, and adds to the overall magic of the area for our visitors and locals alike.
We have adopted this park to ensure that it returns to its pristeen condition, which has been lost to repeated application of harsh chemicals. Another concern is that this park is at the edge of the ocean, and we are determined to protect the reef from runoff and leeching of these chemicals into the reef. EM Bokashi will benefit not only the park grounds, but also the reef. EM actually thrives on toxicity, and will eliminate the harmful effects of any residue of the chemicals.
Along Mamalahoa Highway in Waimea is one of our County's national treasures, an orchard of ornamental cherry trees. Every year, the celebration of the Cherry Blossom Festival is highlighted by these lovely trees. Applications of EM Bokashi promise to enhance the blooming and overall health of the trees here, as well as the Waimea Rugby field aacross the Highway and behind the Police Station.
Organic, Non-toxic Remediation and Restoration for Haiti
Aerial Application of Effective Micro-Organisms
- 25,000 acre aerial application of EM
- Bio-remediate contaminated water and soils.
- Mitigate health impacts from disease and pollutants in urban areas.
- Boost agriculture production.
- Remediate agricultural lands with depleted or polluted soils.
- Assist with restoration of degraded forested and open lands.
- Stabilize landslide risks.
Costs to spray 25,000 acres $1.5 million dollars
• $50/gallon for EM - dilute EM 1:10 with water. 1 gallon of EM/acre. Costs for EM is approximately $1.25M. (Possible to secure EM for $30/gallon.)
• Molasses for EM mixture - $0.40/gallon or $10,000
• Water - assume no cost
• Water filters - assume requirement to filter particulates from water $2,000
• Helicopter or fixed wing aerial application, approximately $250,000
TOTAL $1,512,000
For complete information regarding the science andbenefits of effective micro- organisms
- EM is central to a healthy soil matrix - holds nutrients place, decreases irrigation needs, provides structure for aeration, etc.
- The acids created by the micro-organisms digest
- particles in the environment and make them available
- to plants. EM is 70% bio-available to plants compared to 21% for compost.
- EM breaks down/digests pollutants and contaminants
